They're Doing in America What They Performed within Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the leader try to upend the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your coat you must offer him your sweater as well.

The evident and direct truth that Christ from scripture advocates for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Best of Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of the Savior. In both situations does it mean feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both humility and conviction, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
